Secrets of pro instant noodle eaters, from the fine folks at 2chan....
-Using the kettle like an iron to re-seal the paper top after filling.
-Pouring the leftover broth over fried rice.
-Removing the noodles and cooking them separately, then returning to the broth.
-Deliberately waiting for the noodles to get super soggy.
-Deliberately eating the noodles a minute earlier than you're supposed to so they're al dente.
-Deliberately leaving the top open.
-Dropping sliced cheese in before closing the lid.
-Teaching myself a three-minute song I can sing so they're always cooked perfectly.
-Consuming it in the time it takes to walk home from the convenience store.
-Never paying more than 100 yen for one, ever.
-Tapping the paper top to knock the precious condensation hanging there back into the soup before opening it.
-Eating it with a fork.
-Eating it dry without putting any hot water in.
-Convincing myself that instant noodles and rice balls have enough nutrition to survive on.
These are some pro-grade tricks!

I prefer the cup noodles that have the separate packets for the veggies/stuff, because I can throw them out.
I take the noodles, pour in the water, then crush up a chicken bullion cube and mix it in, pop it in the microwave and good to go.
Very tasty. But I don't get to do it much anymore since the main ramen companies available in general here in the U.S. are of the 'stuff mixed in with the noodles' kind, only having a separate flavor packet (i.e. MSG).
And I don't like the ramen 'bricks' because that involves extra stuff. If I'm gonna use the stove and a pan I'll make me some rice or something. :)
... I wouldn't last a day in Japan, huh?

Sounds like you need to join the thread on 2ch, Steve! :)
As for me, I gave the stuff up after moving to Japan. When you have ramen-ya on every corner, and 600 yen versus 100 isn't really an issue anymore, you tend to go for the real deal.

I wonder if a ramen shop would give me just noodles in chicken broth. Would that freak them out?

Who puts cheese in their instant noodles?! That boggles me.

Especially the cheese sold at convenience stores, which I don't think is actual cheese but some form of digestible polymer.
On that note good cheese is one of the things I miss, living in Japan. It's here but you have to go to specialty shops or gourmet supermarkets and is super expensive.

So if I ever get a chance to come to Japan, I should bring you some cheese? Maybe a 72 slice pack of Kraft American Cheese and some of their shredded varieties? Hm, I wonder if that's legal. I'll have to do research. I'd probably have an easier time bringing booze or smokes in.
